Gaphobos (ガフォボス, Gafobosu) is a Neopteron.
Gaphobos is a moderately large Neopteron resembling a moth. It has a black exoskeleton protecting its body. On the back of the thorax is a marking that superficially resembles a human skull. It has six pairs of bone white limbs, the foremost pair of limbs ending in three claws used to grab and manipulate objects like food, with spikes protruding from each joint. It has a white three-point crest and a pair of brown, feathery antennae. Gaphobos sports two pairs of wings, one larger than the other. The wing are primarily white with an orange, yellow, and black eye marking on each. The tips of the wings split into black rectangles; there are five on the larger pair and four on the smaller pair. Its wings overall resembles large hands. It has shiny purple compound eyes. Its abdomen ends in a white stinger.
As Gaphobos flies it releases powder from its wings. This powder can cause a variety of status effects. From its stinger it sprays an ink-like fluid that obscures the vision of Hunters. It can fly fast and silently thanks to the scales on its wings that function like owl feathers.
Gaphobos is a feared monster, not because of its power or aggression, but because of the legends that surround it. It is said that when a Gaphobos is present, it is an omen indicating that disasters will occur. They sometimes use their forelimbs to touch unaware travelers at night, giving them the scare of their lives. Gaphobos is a nocturnal creature that feeds on honey, nectar, insects, and carrion. It is rather peaceful and curious, investigating anything in their environment that is new to them. It is attracted to bright lights and shiny objects.
Gaphobos inhabits the Jungle, Great Forest, Sunken Hollow, Marshlands, and the Jurassic Frontier.

- Order: Lepidoptera
- Family: Phobos
Gaphobos live in dense forests and marshlands. Its known environments include the Jurassic Frontier, Great Forest, Jungle, Sunken Hollow, and the Marshlands in the Old World.
Gaphobos prefers to feed honey, nectar, insects, and occasionally carrion. It uses its long straw-like proboscis to suck up honey and nectar and eats insects and meat with its mandibles. While Gaphobos doesn't have too many competitors, its needs to be wary of predators like Rathalos, Rathian, Nargacuga, Tigrex, Khezu, Dinovaldo, Deviljho, Gore Magala, Rajang, and Elder Dragons
Gaphobos can emit a powder made from scales on its wings. The color of the power determines the status effect the powder will inflict: Red = Blastblight, Purple = Poison, Yellow = Paralysis, Light green = Sleep. From its stinger it can spray an ink-like fluid. This ink is made from waste products in the creature's body and spraying the ink is how it gets rid of these waste products. Gaphobos is capable of flying without making virtually any sound. Its mandibles can inflict a painful bite, which is strong enough to allow it to hold onto enemies for some time. Its wings can (and generally do) create gales which can topple trees and send other monsters flying.

- Gaphobos's name comes from the Japanese word 蛾 ga, meaning moth, and the Greek word φόβος fóvos, meaning fear, as Gaphobos is commonly feared as an harbinger of disastrous events. This is further referenced to in its title, "Harbinger Moth".
- Its design is based off the Death's-head hawkmoth of the genus Acherontia. It is also partially inspired by the Mothman cryptid.
- When in Rage Mode, its eyes turn from purple to red.
- When Gaphobos flinches, it makes a squeaking sound. Death's-head hawkmoths have the ability to emit a loud squeak if irritated.
- To regain stamina, Gaphobos will eat honey or feed from a carcass depending on where it is fought.
- Gaphobos is always fought at night time.
- When a Hunter holds a torch, Gaphobos will go after the Hunter holding the torch. It will also sometimes steal an item with certain attacks.
