Rolabius (カプランショ Kapuransho) is an Amphibian that has no close relatives besides its desert Subspecies, Sierra Rolabius, and electric Rare Species, Electrum Rolabius.
Rolabius are rather large Amphibians which have a body structure akin to that of Koolasuchus and possess dark grey rocky hide with rock-like spikes on the back. Their head is large and has an egg-like shape. They have two horns on the back of their head that point backwards towards the body and they have two large lines going across their back which can change colors which corresponds to the ailment some of its attacks will cause. Their jaws are filled with large teeth that can interlock to shut their jaws together tightly. The teeth can be seen on the outside of the mouth in a pattern similar to the likes of Kaprosuchus.
Behavior[]
Rolabius are rather large, aggressive Amphibians that hunt their prey by waiting in ambush underground. They will do this by digging mostly into the ground and letting their nostrils and the top of their body stick out. When threatened enough they will mix certain chemicals they create in their body with their saliva to create balls that will cause certain ailments.
Ecological Information[]
Placement in Food Chain[]
Rolabius occupy a position in the middle of the food chain of the environments they've been found inhabiting, meaning they can easily hunt smaller monsters, but they are under predation from large, strong monsters. It's known to be the main predator of the Temnoceran, Sesetara.
Behavior towards Other Monsters[]
Rolabius will attack small monsters if they wander too close, especially when it's underground, or decide to provoke it. Rolabius will attack other large monsters if they wander too close when it's underground, but will otherwise mostly only attack them when it's provoked. Rolabius will flee from powerful monsters and Elder Dragons.
Tracks[]
Rolabius can leave behind a bunch of tracks for hunters to utilize in tracking it down. These tracks include "Clawed Prints", which can be found on the ground, "Rocky Shell", which can be found on the ground, "Wet Drag Marks", which can be found on the ground, and "Colored Saliva", which can be found on the ground or on walls.
Specific Locale Interactions[]
Rolabius doesn't have any specific locale interactions.
Special Behaviors[]
Rolabius will sometimes be partially burrowed into the ground in a similar manner to Basarios when encountered for the first time in a quest. If hunters time it right, they will be capable of getting a hit into the Rolabius before it bursts out of the ground and continues fighting hunters normally.
Cutscenes[]
Hunt Cutscene[]
Location: Jurassic Frontier
Synopsis: As the Hunter enters Area 7 of the Jurassic Frontier they don't notice anything particularly out of the ordinary, so they start walking towards the middle of the area. When they walk over a bunch of rocks, the ground under them starts shaking and the hunter immediately notices the bunch of rocks isn't just a bunch of rocks like they initially thought, but instead a monster. They jump out of the way as the monster leaps up from the ground trying to eat them, slamming its jaws shut. Missing its chance to eat the hunter, the monster gets ready to fight the hunter who knows it's the Rolabius they have been tasked with taking down. The Rolabius charges at the hunter, jaws open and ready to clamp down on the hunter, as the hunt begins.
Ecology Cutscene[]
Location: Ancestral Steppe
Synopsis: The cutscene begins by showing a small herd of Aptonoth travelling through Area 4. The camera then pans to show a pack of Maccao with a Great Maccao entering the area, going towards the Aptonoth. As the Aptonoth start running away with the Maccao and Great Maccao chasing them, they start walking over a weird patch of rocks. While nothing seems to happen as the Aptonoth and small Maccao run over, as soon as the Great Maccao steps on the patch of rocks, the patch moves and suddenly bursts from the ground. It's revealed to be a Rolabius as it closes its jaws on the Great Maccao, pretty much crushing its body instantly. The Maccao look back confused, seeing their leader getting killed. The Rolabius then releases its kill from its mouth and goes after the smaller Maccao which try running away. The much larger Rolabius easily catches up to the smaller Maccao and kills several of them, but some still manage to escape. The Rolabius then takes the smaller kills with it to the Great Maccao. The screen starts turning to black as the Rolabius begins its feast on its kills, marking the end of the cutscene.
Abilities[]
Rolabius have developed a rocky skin to not only make them very good at ambushing their prey, but also makes their skin rather tough and hard to get through. Secondly they have developed their jaws in such a manner that once prey gets stuck in it, it will slowly get crushed more and more as the jaws push against each other harder until their prey is dead and crushed. When enraged the stripes on their back will start to change colors and a certain color will mean what kind of effect their saliva will have when used against foes.
Rage and Tired States[]
Rage State: When Rolabius becomes enraged, its stripes will start to change from black to white, green and orange which signifies the different ailments it will cause when its stripes are that color. White signifies Sleep, Green signifies Fatigue and Orange signifies Defense Down.
Tired State: When Rolabius becomes tired, it will start to drool and might fall over after doing some of its attacks.
Frenzy, Apex, Hyper and Tempered[]
Rolabius can get affected by the Frenzy Virus and thus turn Frenzied, but there are no known cases of Rolabius managing to attain the Apex State. Rolabius can also get into the Hyper State and Tempered State.
Frenzied Rolabius have the usual changes of a Frenzied monster, but they also might cause the Frenzy with their saliva-based attacks.
Tempered Rolabius are considered a Threat Lv1 Tempered Monster and have the usual changes of a Tempered monster.
Rolabius can get into the Hyper State and when it is in this state it gains a new attack:
Ailment Ball Bombardment: Rolabius will shoot out a large amount of small Ailments Balls which can all cause the same ailment. When in the Hyper State the Spit Bite and Ailment Bite will both have an AoE around them which can cause the same status ailment as getting hit by the bite itself.
Hyper Rolabius reward Hyper Extracts and Hyper Fangs in High Rank while rewarding Potent Extracts and Hyper Hardfangs in G-Rank.
Mounts[]
Rolabius' mount resembles a mix between the Zamtrios' mount and Tetsucabra's mount and it can be mounted on its head, body and tail.
Whenever Rolabius is mounted on its head, the hunter will be located at the back of the Rolabius' head, in between its two horns. The Rolabius will try to get hunters off by violently shaking its head around, by running around and by slamming the side of its head into the ground or into walls.
Whenever Rolabius is mounted on its body, the hunter will be located on the sides of the Rolabius, beneath the large rocks on its back which can't be mounted. The Rolabius will try to get hunters off by shaking its body, by running around, by slamming the side of its body into walls and by rolling over the ground.
Whenever Rolabius is mounted on its tail, the hunter will be located near to where the fin on top of its tail starts. The Rolabius will try to get hunters off by violently shaking its tail around and by slamming it into walls or the ground.
In-Game Description[]
Rolabius
Large Amphibians known as the "Rushing Amphibian". These monsters possess powerful jaws used for crushing their prey. These Amphibians are known to attract their favorite prey, Herbivores, with a certain pheromone. Unexperienced Hunters have often fallen victim to this monster's trap.
Ecology[]
Taxonomy[]
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Order: Temnospondyli
Suborder: Stereospondyli
Family: Chigutisauridae
Genus:Pedicasuchus
Species:P. petra
Name Meaning: Rock Foot Trap Crocodile
Rolabius is a member of the Amphibian class that doesn't have any close relatives besides its desert Subspecies, Sierra Rolabius, and electric Rare Species, Electrum Rolabius.
Habitat Range[]
Rolabius have been sighted in the Ancestral Steppe, Sunken Hollow, Everwood, Heaven's Mount, Jurassic Frontier, Ruined Ridge and Verdant Hills in the Old World. They have only been sighted in the Deserted Island in the New World. They have also been sighted in the Highland, Fallen Woods, Rocky Hills, Gem Chasm, Stone Canyon and even in the Blasted Desert.
Ecological Niche[]
Rolabius sit in the middle of the food chain and as such they feed on many things smaller than them and especially things which walk into their trap. Their favorite prey are Herbivores like Aptonoth, Rhenoplos and Kelbi, but also small monsters like Jaggi or Velociprey can fall prey to this large Amphibian. Sometimes it will even take down a Great Jaggi, Velocidrome, Daimyo Hermitaur or Tetsucabra and eat it. Rolabius are known to be the primary predator of the Temnoceran, Sesetara. The Rolabius still has to get a good ambush on the Temnoceran or otherwise it will just get a mouthful of smoke before it can close its jaws around the Sesetara. Even though Rolabius are capable predators they still fall prey to large and powerful monsters like Rathalos, Deviljho, Solmaron and Glavenus.
Biological Adaptations[]
Rolabius have developed a rocky hide on the top of their body to hide them when they are dug into the ground and waiting to ambush their prey. Their hide is also strong and durable which allows them to take punishment. The underside of their body is wet and because of this it is easier for them to crawl through the underground. They have developed their head in a such a manner that the nostrils sit at the part of the snout that sticks out which allows them to breath even when in the ground. Their front claws have been developed to allow them to dig through the ground with relative ease and their jaws have been developed for crushing and this strength comes in play when hunting prey with hard shells or scales. Rolabius can also mix certain chemicals it acquires from eating certain plants with its saliva to give it the ability to cause different ailments.
Behavior[]
Rolabius are rather aggressive Amphibians that like ambushing their prey. The way they lure their favorite prey, Herbivores, to them is by releasing a certain pheromone that Herbivores like a lot. Prey like Jaggi and Velocidrome are only eaten on occasion when they happen to stumble into the Rolabius' trap. Rolabius don't really like doing a head-on fight but whenever their trap fails they will still try to hunt their prey down when it is smaller. It will only try to fight competitors when it has gotten an early strike on them, but whenever it senses a larger, more powerful predator it will try to run away.
Rolabius versus Great Jaggi: The two monsters begin by roaring at each other after which the Great Jaggi calls for its pack of Jaggis. The Rolabius runs towards the Great Jaggi while it's calling and tries swinging one of its claws at it. The Great Jaggi barely manages to avoid the swipe, still getting grazed by a claw, dealing moderately low damage. The Great Jaggi then quickly steps to the side of the Rolabius and bites at its neck, dealing moderate damage. The Rolabius struggles as the Great Jaggi barely manages to keep a hold on it as the pack of Jaggi tries to bite the Amphibian. However, the Rolabius manages to break out of the Great Jaggi's grip, knocking it back, after which it proceeds to flail its body around, knocking out all the Jaggis. The Rolabius then quickly turns and clamps its jaws down onto the Great Jaggi after which it throws it away, dealing rather high damage. The turf war finishes with the Rolabius growling at the Great Jaggi as the Bird Wyvern gets back up and leaves the area.
Rolabius versus Great Slaggi: The two monsters begin by roaring at each other after which the Great Slaggi calls for its pack of Slaggis. The Rolabius runs towards the Great Slaggi while it's calling and tries swinging one of its claws at it. The Great Slaggi barely manages to avoid the swipe, still getting grazed by a claw, dealing moderately low damage. The Great Slaggi then quickly steps to the side of the Rolabius and rams its underside with its horn, trying to flip it while also dealing moderate damage. The Rolabius struggles against the Great Slaggi as it's barely managing to lift the Rolabius and the pack of Slaggi tries to bite the Amphibian. However, the Rolabius manages to force the Great Slaggi away with its weight, knocking it back, after which it proceeds to flail its body around, knocking out all the Slaggis. The Rolabius then quickly turns and clamps its jaws down onto the Great Slaggi after which it throws it away, dealing rather high damage. The turf war finishes with the Rolabius growling at the Great Slaggi as the Bird Wyvern gets back up and leaves the area.
Rolabius versus Tetsucabra: The two monsters begin by roaring at each other after which the Tetsucabra rips a rock out of the ground and throws it towards the Rolabius dealing rather moderate damage. The Tetsucabra then charges at the Rolabius and hits it with its tusks as it's recovering, dealing some moderate damage. The Tetsucabra proceeds to go in for another attack, but the Rolabius recovered faster than it expected and then digs into the ground and bursts out from under the Tetsucabra, launching it in the air and dealing moderate damage. The Rolabius then proceeds to close its jaws on the Tetsucabra as they land after which it shakes the Tetsucabra around before throwing it away, dealing moderately high damage. The turf war finishes with the Rolabius roaring at the Tetsucabra which leaves the area after it manages to get back up.
Rolabius versus Faichcoln: The Rolabius attempts to bite at the Faichcoln several times to no success. A bite almost appears to reach the Faichcoln, but is instead forced to narrowly avoid a face-full of spikes from an arm. The Rolabius almost topples over from this evasion and attempts to body slam the Faichcoln, but ends up in a useless wrestle and quickly thrown to the floor. Seeing that it cannot head-on attack it, the Rolabius digs underground. The Faichcoln notices the earth tremors moving towards it and moves backwards to be ready for the inevitable attack. The Rolabius bursts out from the ground, only to have its hands pinned by the claws of the Faichcoln. With no other choice, the Rolabius rams the head of the Faichcoln while simultaneously spitting an Ailment Ball at the Faichcoln, doing moderate damage ranging on what Ailment is in effect. This tactic comes at a painful price, as the Faichcoln retaliates by first headbutting the Rolabius, and then tearing up its mouth and face with its arm spike assisted claws. This will wound the Rolabius' head and do high damage to it, forcing it to wobble away in pain.

Notes[]
Rolabius' roar requires Earplugs to block.
Whenever a Sonic Bomb or Screamer Pod is used against a Rolabius while it's doing some of its digging attacks, it will cause the Rolabius to come out of the ground while also being stunned for a short time.
Whenever Rolabius is tired it will try to find a small monster and eat it or a carcass and eat from it to regain Stamina.
Rolabius doesn't have its own theme and instead uses the theme of the area it's located in.
Trivia[]
Rolabius is based on Koolasuchus, Kaprosuchus and salamanders.
