Setting[]

Monster Hunter Legacy takes place on a group of islands known as the Relic Isles. These islands each have their own set of civilizations, though not as many people are around as there used to be. The islands are rich with ancient ruins and artifacts making it a popular place for archaeological digs. The people of the Relic Isles are friendly to outsiders. They are happy to share their stories with those who are willing to listen.

The Relic Isles are located somewhat near the New World. But it is unclear if the Isles are to be considered Old World or New World, as monsters from either are found here. Many new species live here as well, with some even being found in the New World itself.

Each island seems to be ruled by an Elder Dragon. These Elder Dragons supposedly took up residence here during the Great Dragon War. Some have drastically changed their island, altering the ecosystem. Monsters have evolved and adapted since then, and this damage is irreversible. It is speculated that this happened due to the Elder Crossing and the New World not being far away. But the people of the Relic Isles believe a more sinister force might have caused this during the war.

Story[]

The hunter is stationed in a medium sized village near the Broken Archipelago. Your hunter is accompanied by a Guild Girl that serves much like the Handler does, coming along on hunts to help survey the land and take notes on the monsters.

The local people are uneasy, due to the sighting of a rare monster that is very much dreaded, known as the Malybris. Unsure about whether such a docile Elder Dragon can really cause such disasters, the hunter’s partner decides that the duo should look into it themselves, investigating old ruins and asking different locals.

As the hunter and their partner are investigating, new reports are coming in that some monsters have been getting stirred up lately, one of which is getting too close for comfort to the village. The pair are tasked with investigating and repelling the monster, which turns out to be Flurreligar, a monster both revered and feared in the Relic Isles.

After repelling Flurreligar, the pair resume their investigation. They have traveled to just about every island in the Relic Isles, talking to various people and investigating the ruins. Many times, they have found images of what appears to be Flurreligar, along with three other monsters that look like Malybris. No one seems to be sure about what these are though. The Flurreligar from before returns, and this time it must be hunted down. During the hunt, Malybris has apparently shown itself again, and reports are coming in of monsters across the Relic Isles going berserk and even another island becoming tainted.

The pair return from the hunt and learn of this, and are tasked with hunting the Malybris. Still unconvinced that Malybris is the cause of anything here, the pair hesitate, but the Village Elder is adamant that it must be done, even if just as a precaution.

The Malybris is slain, and a celebration ensues in the village. The pair are uninterested in the celebration as they recall what happened. Malybris almost seemed unwilling to fight. It took a bit of provoking for it to fight back. Your partner especially feels terrible about it. But what's done is done. They take a well needed break for a bit before resuming their duties.

<tabber>

In the nights after the defeat of Malybris, there have been frequent meteor showers. The people of the Relic Isles saw this as a sign of the gods smiling upon them. But in the coming days, this would not be the case.

Entire islands are dying out. The Stained Jungle was considered one of the most beautiful places in the world. But suddenly, the island is becoming heavily polluted. Other smaller islands are suffering a similar fate. In addition to this, monsters appear to be falling under some kind of disease, as many have been reported being surrounded in some kind of miasma and becoming unusually aggressive. Your hunter and partner are sent out to investigate.

At one point, it was theorized that Gore Magala was somehow the cause, but it's quickly realized that this is far different from the Frenzy Virus.

The monster Stellorung is eventually discovered. It is believed to be the cause of the dying islands. People talk of stories revolving around Stellorung bringing disaster to people. The hunter attempts to defeat it, but it escapes. It is then rediscovered, but something is off. It is uninjured. Regardless, the monster is fought and defeated.

Soon after, another alarming discovery is made. These particular bugs have been found all around the polluted islands. They are known as Tekuro. They are linked to the Elder Dragon known as Kutsamada Kalypto. It turns out this monster is the true cause of the pollution. It is believed to have come to the Relic Isles on its way to the New World thanks to the Elder Crossing.

Kutsamada Kalypto is slain, but the chain of disastrous events isn't over. The Stellorung that was defeated was not the same one that was previously injured. It turns out, that one went to heal up. Now it has matured into Astroctorem. It has become an even bigger threat, and must be slain.

Another fight, and now the Astroctorem is defeated. The Village Elder is beyond thankful for the hunter and their partner, and would love to give them a break. However, your partner is concerned that none of this seemed to be linked to the mysterious miasma that monsters seem to be afflicted with recently.

Monster Hunter Legacy Quest List

Gameplay/Other Mechanics[]

  • Monster Hunter Legacy uses a gameplay style like Iceborne's, but the slinger is not present.
  • Monster Hunter Legacy uses Rise's visual style.
  • Underwater combat is present.
  • New Moth monster comrades are introduced.
  • Investigations return, as does free hunting/expeditions.
  • Hybrid Elements have unique visual effects.
  • Quests aren't split into assignments and such. They follow the original system of having the general quest list, with there being key quests throughout.
    • Key Quests are marked however.
  • A "Warning" system inspired by Portable 3rd's Warning Quests is present. During a quest with an unstable environment, there is a chance for a monster to invade, causing one of the present monsters to flee. The invading monster will make its way directly to the hunter if possible, and focus on them temporarily. The invading monster does more damage than usual, and under most circumstances cannot be slayed or captured.

  • Armors can now go through a special upgrade process that will enable hunters to drastically change the pigment of multiple parts of each armor piece, allowing for more customization. In addition, many armors can also be customized with patterns and different material types.

Monster Taming[]

Inspired by part of the Witcher collab in Monster Hunter World, you are able to tame monsters and summon them to come help you in quests or fight with them in pvp arenas. Monsters can only be tamed during expeditions, and you can only tame a monster you have hunted at least five times. Taming the monster involves approaching them and offering them various foods. Some monsters are easier to tame than others, but every monster that can be found during an expedition can be tamed, including some Elder Dragons. You gain a special horn item that you can use to summon your monster during a quest. It will only fight with you for a short time, but the horn and affection levels can be upgraded allowing them to stay longer. You cannot summon your monster in multiplayer quests outside of a few exceptions.

Taming A Monster[]

Taming a monster can be a lengthy process, depending on the monster. It typically involves leaving out food for the monster to come and eat, and then hoping it lets you interact. Once the monster allows you to pet it, you can store it in your Monster Pen. If it doesn't, it will likely leave the locale. You can re encounter the monster at a later time and re attempt the process. You can see if the monster is there when selecting the expedition, and you will also be greeted by a message stating "The Scoutflies detect a familiar scent..."

How To Use A Tamed Monster[]

When you reach a certain point in the game, you will unlock your Monster Pen and a Summoning Horn. While on a quest, you can use the Summoning Horn to call your selected monster. They will come and fight with you for a certain amount of time from almost anywhere on any map, but only certain monsters can be summoned underwater. You can also only summon your monster a certain amount of times during a quest. Your monster won't hurt you, but it can cause knockback, tremors, windpress, and roar effects at lower affection levels. Your monster also cannot be killed on a quest. If it loses all of its health, it will simply limp away and leave the map. If your monster loses all of its health, it cannot be resummoned on that quest, and it must sit out the next three. Certain food can allow it to be ready again immediately though. PvP is also a place where you can use a tamed monster.

Affection Levels[]

Once you have your tamed monster, it has an affection level from 0-5. As you raise the level, your monster gets stronger, they can stay on a quest longer, you get more interactions with them, and they can unleash powerful attacks. To raise the affection level, you can feed your monster various food, play with them, and groom them. Summoning them on a quest also raises its level, but if it loses all of its health, it only gets raised by a little bit. At level 0, you can only interact with them at the Monster Pen. They can be summoned on a quest, but they will only show up for a couple of attacks, and can only be summoned once. At level 1, you are able to take your monster out and interact with it on a free hunt. It can also be summoned on a quest for a full minute. At level 2, your monster can be summoned for a minute and a half, and Summon Horn can be used twice on a quest. At level 3, your monster will no longer affect you with roars, windpress, or tremors and your monster can be summoned for two minutes. You can also ride on your monster while out of combat during free hunts. At level 4, your monster can be summoned for up to three minutes, and the Summon Horn can be used up to three times on a quest. Your monster will also be allowed to be summoned on certain Siege Quests. On top of all of that, you can start a quest with your monster already summoned, and ride them while out of combat on quests. At level 5, your monster becomes maxed out and can be summoned for five minutes at a time. The Summon Horn also recharges numerous times throughout the quest. Your monster also unlocks "Affection Attacks". This allows them to use their powerful Hyper Attacks, but rather than a flash of the Hyper aura, pink hearts flash around the monster. Some monsters are harder to level up than others.

Custom Weapons[]

In Monster Hunter Legacy, there are options to make custom weapons using parts you obtain from the Old Citadel and from Sieges. You obtain parts that you can mix and match to make the design of your weapons, which also determine the stats.

Siege Mode[]

Siege Mode returns in Monster Hunter Legacy. Like in Monster Hunter World, the siege quests cycle in and out, but there is usually at least two active. As the main goal is completed, it levels up for all people involved. As the quests level up, the monster gets increased stats and more attacks, but also increases the chances for better rewards. The quest will stay leveled up for you as long as the siege is active, even if you shut off the game. Once it cycles out, it resets to level 1 for everybody. You get more rewards for leveling up a siege, and higher chances for rarer rewards for completing high level sieges, so there is benefit to both starting a new siege or joining a higher leveled one. The siege will still level up for everyone involved, but the rewards are based on the host. Sometimes vouchers can be earned to immediately level a siege to a certain level. Sieges go from level 1-100. The main reward for Siege Mode is the custom weapons, but unlike from the Citadel, the Siege Mode weapons' designs and stats cannot be chosen. You can still upgrade the attributes of the weapon through Citadel rewards though. Instead, the Siege weapons have certain armor skills pre-built into them. The higher level the Siege, the better the skills, and at high levels, there is also a chance to get parts to swap the skill of a Siege weapon.

List of Siege Monsters[]

Notes: Monsters in bold are exclusive to Siege Mode.

  • Dalamadur

  • Gyo Roi

Reworked Hyper[]

The Hyper Monsters have been reworked for this game, as they play an important role later on in the story. Hyper monsters are now surrounded by a black and red aura, rather than only two parts of their body affected at a time. At random, when a monster attacks, the aura will spark and flash like the effects in Monster Hunter Generations, but instead of the attack simply having different speeds, the attack is upgraded in different ways, usually with a new animation to accompany it. Some examples include a Hyper Pukei-Pukei’s altered poison glob spit would fire a large amount of poison globs, or during Hyper Rathian’s backflip, she will spit flames to add the fire element to it. After a few charged attacks, the aura will thin out, signaling that the monster is temporarily weakened and cannot use an upgraded attack. After some time, the aura will return to normal. Elderseal can help force the aura to vanish for a small amount of time. While standing in the aura, all resistances are slightly lowered. Some Elder Dragons can also now be affected.
