Culmolus (ナイテンシ, Naitenshi) is a Flying Wyvern.

Physiology

Culmolus is a relatively large Flying Wyvern with a mostly blue-gray body that is dotted with teal spots that are bordered by dark yellow rings. The lower trims of its wing membranes are divided into small, rounded points, giving the impression of feathers, and each third joint of its wings are adorned with a large, claw-like spike. It has a broad head and two pairs of sharp bony plates which form a beak-like structure. It has well defined, muscular legs and and sharp talons on its feet, each with three sharp black claws and one dewclaw. Its eyes are yellow. Culmolus's tail is long, moderately thick, and has a large sickle-like blade at the tip

Abilities

The spots on Culmolus's body are actually large pores that secrete a toxic sweat-like fluid. Culmolus sprays this fluid at the eyes of attackers. The sickle-shaped blade is rather sharp and is mostly used for hunting and defensive purposes. Culmolus has well-developed muscles that allow it to move silently and strike prey and foes from behind.

Behavior

Culmolus is an unusual wyvern in terms of behavior. Most of the time is it completely still, hiding in darkness and using its large wings to cover its body. Once prey draws close enough, it will silently stalk its selected prey item until the opportunity to strike rises, and lashes at its prey with its tail sickle. If a prey item spots Culmolus, it will instantly and viciously attack it, killing the prey with its claws and tail sickle. This cryptic behavior makes Culmolus an incredibly effective and deadly ambush predator. This crypsis also serves as a form of camouflage, allowing Culmolus to hide from predators. Should it be detected by a predator, Culmolus will respond by letting out a high-pitched cry that sounds akin to human crying and spraying its poisonous sweat.

Habitat

Culmolus prefers to inhabit forested and rocky areas. These habitats include Verdant Hills, Marshlands, Deserted Island, Flooded Forest, Ancestral Steppe, Heaven's Mount, Misty Peaks, Primal Forest, and the Jurassic Frontier.

Ecology

Information

Peculiar wyverns that are expert ambush hunters, silently stalking prey for long periods of time before finally unleashing a single lethal strike. From pore on their body they secrete a poisonous "sweat" that they spray when threatened or provoked, aiming for the eyes of the aggressor. Their eerie roars sound not unlike human sobbing.

Taxonomy

  • Suborder: Wyvern Feet
  • Infraorder: Stalker Wyvern
  • Family: Culmo

Culmolus are a recently discovered species of Flying Wyverns.

Habitat Range

Culmolus of the Old World inhabit areas such as the Verdant Hills, Marshlands, Deserted Island, Ancestral Steppe, Heaven's Mount, Primal Forest, Jurassic Frontier. Culmolus of the New World inhabit the Deserted Island, Flooded Forest, and Misty Peaks.

Ecological Niche

Culmolus are highly proficient ambush predators that stalk a specific prey item for indefinite periods of time. When the time is right, Culmolus will reveal itself and attack and kill its prey. Their preferred prey items are herbivores such as Aptonoth, Mosswine, Kelbi, Rhenoplos, and Slagtoth. However, it co-exists alongside other predators such as Rathalos, Rathian, Tigrex, Nargacuga, Yian Garuga, Malfestio, Brachydios, Glavenus, Deviljho, Seltas Queen, and Elder Dragons. Its cryptic behavior, however, usually allows it to avoid confronting these other monsters.

Biological Adaptations

Culmolus has well-developed muscles that allow it to move silently and strike prey and foes from behind. It can also fly silently as well, thanks to the special structure of its wing membranes. The curved blade at the end of its tail is made from modified bone, and its very sharp. Most of the time it is used by humans as a forging material. Culmolus's spots are capable of producing of a poisonous sweat-like substance that it sprays at predators. This fluid is formed in small poison sacs located beneath the skin under each spot. It usually aims for the eyes, akin to a spitting cobra. Its high-pitched roar is said to sound eerily similar to a crying human. It lets out this sobbing roar when threatened.
