Boxeulang is a large, purple, lobster-like Carapaceon found in mountains, oceans, wetlands, and tundras. It is notable for its metal-like exoskeleton, a large crest similar to those found on the helmets of Spartan hoplites, and a large pair of chela that look like armoured boxing gloves. Due to how dangerous it is, it is limited to High-Rank and G-Rank quests.

Physiology[]

Boxeulang
N/A A large Carapaceon notable for its large crest, metallic shell, and fist-like chelae designed more for smashing objects than they are for grabbing them. They are very prideful monsters, searching far and wide for worthy opponents, and have access to the Thunder Pole element, which they release through spikes found on their chelae.

Boxeulang greatly resembles lobsters, but has some differences to set itself apart from them. Its body is covered in a metallic purple shell, and its underbelly is white. Dark purple markings shaped like lightning bolts can be found on its legs and forearms, and dark purple ring-like markings can be found near the toes, around the abdomen, and on the tail. It has a large crest shaped like those found on Spartan hoplites' helmets, with the "horsehair" being white with mauve edges, and large, violet spikes can be found on the cephalothorax. Its most striking feature is its chelae, which are shaped like boxing gloves, but are dark purple in colouration, have a metallic appearance that makes them resemble gauntlets, and have four long, violet "knuckle" spikes on them that direct electricity into targets.

Ecology[]

Boxeulang is an omnivore and a scavenger, and will eat anything it can find, ranging from berries and herbs to smaller monsters, such as Altaroth, Bnahabra, Kelbi, Anteka, Gargwa, Popo, Ludroth, Zamite, Great Jaggi, Great Baggi, Bulldrome, and Arzuros. It has access to the rare Thunder Pole element, and it is believed to gain its powers from feeding on plants high in Thunder and Dragon Nectar and eating monsters who have access to these elements, whether it hunted them itself or scavenged their remains after their killer(s) left the area. Its shell is metallic, which comes from it eating ore, and it uses this metallic shell to direct electricity fused with dark energy into attackers via conduction, warding them off. The spikes on its back and chelae act as lightning rods, directing electricity into its body that it stores in a specialized sac, and its chelae are designed more for smashing than for grabbing, which helps it crush the shells of armoured prey. Due to how dense its body is, it is not a very good swimmer, being more likely to walk or jump across the ocean floor instead of swimming, but it makes up for it with its Thunder Pole attacks, which make it an apex predator underwater. Its crest serves as a status symbol, with the strongest members of the species having the largest crests, and these grow as individuals survive various battles. When members of the species compete for territory, they will hold boxing competitions to see who is the most fit to own the land or breed, with the winner taking the territory over and the loser being exiled. Female Boxeulangs will challenge males to see if they are worthy of breeding with them, and if a male can successfully beat a female in a fight, she will let him breed with her. It is reasonably intelligent, being able to change its fighting style on a whim if faced with opponents who specialize in one area, and can change the amount of electricity it directs into its parts at will. The latter ability, however, is not perfect; one part will lose its charge while the others gain, leaving it less powerful while the others get more powerful. The species is highly competitive, actively seeking out any worthy challengers they can find, regardless of species, and this trait is due to them wanting to hone their abilities the best they can so they can uphold their status in any way they can.

Behavior[]

Boxeulang is aggressive and territorial, attacking anything that draws near it or its territory until they surrender or die. It is competitive and prideful, taking great pride in its fighting ability and actively challenging anything in the same area as it to duels so it can hone its strength and be the best it can hope to be, regardless of how strong its targets are. When faced with threats who specialize in one particular area, it will change its fighting style to put itself at an advantage.

Abilities[]

While Boxeulang has no ranged attacks, it is an efficient close-range fighter, having immense strength, rigid defenses, and considerable speed. It has access to the Thunder Pole element, which it directs into targets with spikes on its fist-like chelae, and can change its fighting style depending on the type of threat fought. It can direct electricity into different parts of its body, which increases their strength. It has four different fighting styles, each with their own abilities:

  • Balanced Mode: Stats are spread out evenly, and the fighting style is straightforward. It will use a mix of the other three abilities' attributes, but will not specialize, and will neither gain increases or decreases in power, speed, or durability. This is the Boxeulang's default Mode.
  • Swarmer Mode: Electricity is sent to the arms and legs, but is absorbed from the torso. The monster's attack power, movement speed, and arm/leg durability are increased, but the torso's durability is decreased, and the monster is more vulnerable to status effects. This fighting style is very aggressive and up-close, putting hunters with weapons with long reach like Long Swords, Hunting Horns, Switch Axes, Insect Glaives, Light Bowguns, Heavy Bowguns, and Bows at a disadvantage.
  • Slugger Mode: Electricity is sent to the arms and torso, but is absorbed from the legs. The monster's attack power, resistance to status effects, and arm/torso defense are increased, but its movement speed and leg durability are decreased. This fighting style is slow and predictable, but it can dish out and take all sorts of damage, and the monster has a high chance of stunning targets and a lower chance of flinching, putting short-range weapons like Swords and Shields, Dual Blades, and Tonfas at a disadvantage.
  • Out-boxer Mode: Electricity is sent to the legs and torso, but is absorbed from the arms. The monster's movement speed, resistance to status effects, and leg/torso durability are increased, but its attack power and arm durability are decreased. This fighting style relies on range and wit, with the monster keeping its distance from the hunter whenever it can and searching for any weak points it can find, and it is heavily reliant on counterattacks. This fighting style puts hunters with slow weapons like Great Swords, Hammers, Lances, Gunlances, and Charge Blades at a disadvantage.

Habitat[]

Boxeulang is found in mountains, oceans, wetlands, and arctic areas.

Attacks[]

Boxeulang shares many physical attacks with Daimyo Hermitaur and Shogun Ceanataur, but cannot use the back hop, ceiling cling/drop, or dig attacks, and its claw-based attacks inflict Thunder Pole damage along with Severe Thunderblight, Severe Dragonblight, and Magnet. That said, it has some moves of its own.

Swarmer Mode

Electricity is sent to the Boxeulang's arms and legs, but is absorbed from the torso. This will wear off in 100 seconds, or until the monster receives sufficient damage to the torso; once this happens, it will revert back to its Balanced Mode for 30 seconds before changing its mode again.

Slugger Mode

Electricity is sent to the Boxeulang's arms and torso, but is absorbed from the legs. The monster's attack power, resistance to status effects, and arm/torso defense are increased, but its movement speed and leg durability are decreased. This fighting style is slow and predictable, but it can dish out and take all sorts of damage, and the monster will not flinch if struck and has a high chance of stunning targets, putting short-range weapons like Swords and Shields, Dual Blades, and Tonfas at a disadvantage. This will wear off in 100 seconds, or until the monster receives sufficient damage to the legs; once this happens, it will revert back to its Balanced Mode for 30 seconds before changing its mode again.

Out-boxer Mode

Electricity is sent to the Boxeulang's legs and torso, but is absorbed from the arms. This will wear off in 100 seconds, or until the monster receives sufficient damage to the arms; once this happens, it will revert back to its Balanced Mode for 30 seconds before changing its mode again.

Jab

Boxeulang uses a weak, yet quick punch, then jumps backwards to avoid getting hit. This attack deals low-medium damage and inflicts Severe Thunderblight, Severe Dragonblight, and Magnet. It will often use this attack in Out-boxer Mode, but rarely uses it in Swarmer Mode or Slugger Mode, and will sometimes use it in Balanced Mode. It can use this attack both on land and underwater.

Heavy Hook

Boxeulang slowly rears its fist back, then throws a powerful hook. This attack deals high damage, inflicts Severe Thunderblight, Severe Dragonblight, Magnet, and Stun, and will send the hunter across the area. It will often use this attack in Slugger Mode, but rarely uses it in Out-boxer Mode or Swarmer Mode, and will sometimes use it in Balanced Mode. It can use this attack both on land and underwater.

Heavy Uppercut

Boxeulang slowly rears its fist back, then throws a powerful uppercut. This attack deals high damage, inflicts Severe Thunderblight, Severe Dragonblight, Magnet, and Stun, and will send the hunter into the air. It will often use this attack in Slugger Mode, but rarely uses it in Out-boxer Mode or Swarmer Mode, and will sometimes use it in Balanced Mode. It can use this attack both on land and underwater.

All-Out Assault

Boxeulang gets close to the hunter and releases a flurry of hooks and uppercuts. This attack deals medium-high damage and inflicts Severe Thunderblight, Severe Dragonblight, and Magnet. It will often use this attack in Swarmer Mode, but rarely uses it in Out-boxer Mode or Slugger Mode, and will sometimes use it in Balanced Mode. It can use this attack both on land and underwater.

Counter Punch

Boxeulang blocks its face with its arms, then turns in the direction of the hunter, waiting for them to strike. If the hunter hits it, their attack will automatically be deflected and it will strike back, and if they attack, but don't hit it, it will punch them while their guard is down. It will block its face for 25 seconds before moving on.

Bob-and-Weave

Boxeulang bends down, rolls to the side of incoming attacks, then uses an uppercut.

Face Crusher

Boxeulang spreads its arms apart, then slams them into the hunter's head. This attack deals low damage and inflicts Stun. It will use this attack in any of its modes as a method of opening a hunter up for a beat down, and can use it both on land and underwater.

Deflecting Backhand

If attacked enough times in a row, Boxeulang will quickly backhand the hunter's weapon (Blademaster) or projectiles (Gunner). Blademasters will lose their balance, setting them up for another attack, while Gunners will have their projectiles fly off in random directions, dealing low-medium damage to anyone they hit. It can use this attack in any of its modes as a method of warding off attacks, and can use it both on land and underwater.

Critical Uppercut

Boxeulang charges its fists with immense amounts of Thunder Pole energy, does a powerful uppercut that sends it into the air (if used on land) or near the surface (if used in water), then slams its fists onto the ground. This attack will instantly kill any hunter whose Thunder and Dragon Resistances are below +25 (if both Resistance levels are at +25 or higher, the attack will reduce a hunter's health to 1 HP and inflict Severe Thunderblight, Severe Dragonblight, and Magnet instead). It can use it in any of its modes, and will only use it when enraged.

The Painted Waterfalls are truly a work of art, but alas, a pair of vandals are tearing it apart and mugging anyone who tries to intervene. I'm in no condition to stop them, so could you please show them the door before they ruin this masterpiece for good?

How do I keep getting myself into these kind of messes? I was sent out yet again to take on an ornery pair of monsters, and I predictably came back all battered and bloodied. I should really consider changing my field of work. But until then, could you be a pal and take this assignment off my hands?

Trivia[]

  • Boxeulang's name is a portmanteau of boxeur, which is French for "boxer", and ulang, which is Tagalog for "lobster".
  • When exhausted, Boxeulang will sometimes whiff its punches and fall over, leaving it open to attack. It can recover stamina by feeding on herbs, berries, ore, corpses, or the local Herbivores of the area it's in.
  • Boxeulang's alternate fighting styles were based on the three main styles of boxing: boxing/out-fighting, which is reliant on distance, endurance, and strategy, swarming/in-fighting, which revolves around speed, aggression, and getting close to the opponent, and slugging/brawling, which focuses on sheer power and toughness.
  • Boxeulang's Critical Uppercut takes inspiration from the Star Uppercut from Punch-Out!!, but its effects were also based on the one used by Raymond Sullivan in Dead Rising 2, which would reduce Chuck's health to a single hit point if it connected.
